Like us they breathe oxygen but unlike us they can consume cellulose and lignin. Two main building blocks to plant life. Fungi have the ability to do photosynthesis in reverse in a way. Pretend that photosynthesis is a zipper that plants close as they go through the cycle to provide nutrients. Fungi can unzip that zipper making nutrients available once again to new plant life.
